Wisdom of the past

.
There is a very fine line between progress and throwing away the wisdom of the generations that have lived before us.

I am no romantic. I am fully aware that life say one hundred years ago was hard. And while there are some who are yearning for those ‘good ol’ days’, I’m not one of them.
Truth be told, I fully enjoy all the technology I can afford in order to make my life easier. Especially where we are talking household chores...

Can you imagine, washing all your laundry by hand on a washboard? It would take you at least all day. And it wasn’t the only thing that needed to be done. You also needed to cook dinner; perhaps even with very little means... Bearing children wasn’t a choice; getting pregnant was just what happened. And childbirth was something that could well kill you...

No, I am happy that those days are behind us. I am grateful for my washing machine, my fridge, my gas stove, my electrical oven, my microwave... Not to speak of phone, computer, printer, scanner...
They make my life so much easier!

But there are things that were so normal then, common sense things, or even wise things that we may disregard at our own peril.

Like when you put a lot of people, animals, or even the same kind of plants together in a small space, they may get prone to disease, or fall prey to pests. Giving them air and space would usually give their immune systems a chance to recover, to heal the illness. And when there is a greater diversity in the plants we grow for our food, the chances of our crops being diminished by pests get smaller.
And food is grown according to the season...
It is the way nature works.

Or the understanding that when you have worked hard all week, there needs to be a time for rest as well. One cannot just keep keeping on and expect to stay healthy.

Sounds like common sense? Well it is.
And yet in this day and age we seek to protect our crops from insects by making the pesticide part of the genetic makeup of the plants. And when we can no longer keep keeping on, we find ourselves in a burnout that can take a year or longer to recover from...

When we throw away the wisdom of the generations that have lived before us, it is like cutting off the roots of the tree we expect to flourish, and then be surprised that what we have created looks like a desert...

Magic

.
There are places where magic is something that is in the air, or in the water... Places where magic is so all pervasive that whether you want to or not ~ for that time that you are visiting you are going to be part of it; just as it is going to be part of you...

Sometimes these places of magic are ancient. Like stone circles, standing stones, or an old, old grove of trees. Other times they are that little pond in the forest that without real reason never quite dries out. Or that patch of ferns that keeps taking over in the garden; a little ‘wild spot’ right in the middle of town.

It also seems like some Countries are more magical than others.
Perhaps that particular culture allows for the unspoken and unseen more than other cultures do. Or possibly it is the way nature flourishes in that specific climate...
One way or another magic becomes more obvious, more visible in some Countries.

To me Ireland ~ the Emerald Isle ~ is one of those magical places...
A space where you can see the fairies and the gnomes from the corner of your eye; and then, when you look, they are gone and all you hear is a soft tingling laughter.
A place where nature seems to have the ability to envelop you so completely, that you cannot help but to be one with it. A place where you can hear the trees whisper; and sometimes, when things are really quiet, you can even hear the grass grow.

When visiting a place like that, it is very easy for magic to become part of your life.
For that little patch of sunlight to appear, warming your face as you are meditating on an otherwise dreary day. Or that unanticipated detour that brings you to the most beautiful sights you have ever seen. Yet by the same token getting soaking wet so you can experience that exquisite rainbow against a leaden sky...

The magical Emerald Isle brings me a sense of peace that is hard to find anywhere else. Peace within as well as without.
And perhaps that is the greatest magic of all...

Logic says that one doesn’t have to travel anywhere to get any of those ‘magical things’.
There are fairies in the average back yard. Sunshine and rain showers happen pretty much anywhere, and keeping track of the weather forecast should make it easy to experience them if that is what you want.

But then again ~ magic isn’t logical...

Free will choice

.
The other day I was watching a short video on youtube of Swami Beyondananda (http://wakeuplaughing.com/index.php) where he says something to the effect of “If you choose to be miserable, you can do that too! Whatever makes you happy...”

It is a nice illustration of on how many things in life we can make a free will choice.

We often have no say in what kind of challenges we encounter on our personal path, yet we most definitely have a lot of free will choice on how we handle them!
And the fact of the matter is that we are never given a learning opportunity by the Universe that we cannot handle. That we cannot find the solution to, one way or another. How we get to that solution; how we handle the situation is a matter of choice.

It brings up any number of questions... Like, do we shirk our responsibility; reject the ‘growth opportunity’ (from a spiritual perspective), and run away from it? Or do we handle it as best we can? Do we let it take over our lives and allow it to drag us down? Or do we place it into perspective?

It is the choices we make that lead us onward on our path.
And for pretty much all of us it is true that looking back over say the past five years or so, some choices we made were great, while other times we probably would have been able to do things differently; given 20/20 hindsight.
As we ~ from a spiritual perspective ~ are creating everything that happens in our own lives; our choices get us ‘into trouble’ at times, and ‘out of trouble’ on other times. In the process we learn our life lessons. And we move onward on our path.

Free will choice, therefore, is a great mechanism for living our lives. Free will choice is a fantastic tool for us to use ~ and we should use it every chance we get. Not only to make our decisions, but also in asking questions. Free will choice puts us in a position ~ is our tool ~ to gain all the information we need to make our ‘free will choice decision’...

And ultimately we have the choice to live our lives being positive, optimistic, and happy as we continue on our individual life paths ~ or rather be negative, pessimistic, and miserable.
As the Swami says: “Whatever makes you happy”.

Non-words

.
Every once in a while we may find ourselves in a situation that calls for a word that doesn’t exist. Yet. The question is, what do we do when that happens to us? Do we invent the word that feels fitting? Or do we ‘WTF?’ it? Or put a word in with lots of stars instead of letters in order to make the word suitable for all languages (As if the younger ones amongst us don’t understand what we are saying... Hmmmm...)

Often the ‘right word’ is not easily found.
Sometimes it works to break up an existing word, giving its pieces a whole new meaning; a meaning that suits the situation. The other day I was watching a video of Swami Beyonananda, and he had a pretty good one:
The situation is the current economic situation, or as he said: the economic emergency. Which according to the Swami really means: ‘emerge and see’. Therefore the situation is not as foreboding as it seems; however it is forcing us to come to a new and different perspective on the current situation as we evolve into a different energy ~ as we are moving on.

Other times the name eventually becomes a verb ~ as happened with Google.

Whatever word we dream up is bound to be more creative than the ‘WTF?’ or the ‘f-multiple-star’ solution. And more articulate at that. And sometimes the new word ~ which at that point is still a non-word ~ only needs to convey a sense, a feeling, or an emotion. And then a sound can be enough. Or one can go for the abbreviation of a short sentence, like ‘woot!’ ~ literally ‘want one of those!’.

With the internet at our fingertips, relatively new words can change their meaning too. Like LOL. A columnist started the term which at that time meant ‘little old lady’. Now it pretty much universally stands for ‘laughing out loud’.

The nice thing is that language is a living thing that, like us and the world around us is in constant change. The new era allows us to experience new situations that call for new words. These new words start out as ‘non-words’; yet the ones that stick in our vocabulary eventually make it into our dictionary, at which point they have become well and true words in our language.

It is actually quite nice how that works!
And it all starts with a ‘non-word’ that somebody dreams up to describe a new situation.
What word would you dream up?

Ownership

.
We can own all kinds of possessions. From property like house and garden, to our car. From furniture to the clothes we wear. We can also own our actions and opinions. We can even patent our ideas. We create our own space and we may feel quite offended when someone oversteps the boundary.
But what about our pets? Do we own our pets? Are they our property, for us to do with as we please? Or trees? Or the wildlife that may visit our garden? Or people?

It may seem a bit absurd to bring it up. I suppose most people would agree that we can own ‘things’. Yet as soon as we start about living beings, things start to get complicated. And the more we can interact with that other being, the more grey the area of ownership tends to become.

Plants for instance, we can own. Yet when we state we own that big stand of old trees and therefore we can do with it as we please, chances are we are about to face an uproar from friend and foe alike. And our pets... We may have brought them into our lives paying a pretty penny for them; yet once there they tend to quickly become our companion rather than our property.

To take it one step further ~ the time we have with our children is borrowed. We as adults are there to teach and encourage them, to help them discover what they are all about and where their passion may be found. Once on their way, they quickly become independent beings, owned by no-one but themselves.

People should not aim to own other people. To tie them down, and to force them in to something that they are not.

And as obvious as that is ~ it makes me think about ownership form a different perspective.
Is there any way in which we can benefit from ownership of whatever possession, just for the sake of owning it?
Or is it in reality all about enjoying the company of an energy that we have brought into our lives; even when it is about a car or a couch?
That would imply that both have something to offer to the other.

So for instance when we look at our car ~ the car offers us a mode of transportation, and depending on the weather, shelter. In turn we provide it with the gasoline and maintenance it needs. And as long as both sides serve each other ~ one could even say there is a respectful, balanced relationship going on between the car and the person; the owner.

I guess that is more important as it seems that even ownership is a ‘two-way-street’.

Trusting the Universe, again

.
It is easy to perceive the ‘good things’ that are happening to us as gifts from an All Knowing, benevolent Universe. It is a lot harder to look upon the ‘bad things that may happen to us in the same manner.

And let me be clear, we don’t have to receive each of the Universes gifts with the same sense of joy. Yet it is important to receive these gifts ~ whether they are immediately beneficial to us, or whether they are nasty, hurtful things that happen to us ~ with the same grace. To thank the Universe either way. To see how the Universe’s gift can ultimately help you, even when it started out with breaking your heart...

This brings up questions along the lines of:
  • What can I learn from this situation?
  • Is there something within me that needs to change? Like an attitude?
  • Is there any area in my life where I find myself holding a grudge?
  • Do I feel like there is a persistent frustration in my life? And if there is, what does it stem from?
  • Do I experience a stressful situation in my life that I am putting up with rather than changing it?
Looking at any situation, be it a desired situation or a situation that in all reality we feel we could have done without, from this or a similar perspective can show us a lot about ourselves and what we are made of. It can reveal to us how we live our lives.
And it can guide us onto a path that may well be miraculous beyond our wildest dreams.

All it takes is that we trust the Universe every step of the way.
And that we hold on to our heart’s greatest desires.

If we feel that we are doing what we are meant to do in life, we may find ourselves in situations that challenge us on our path. Yet if we have the inner strength to keep going with it, and solve disputes as they come up, only to learn from that and to go back doing what we know we do best ~ chances are that this can bring us further than we ever dreamed possible.
And as we put in the work ~ both on an outer, mundane level, as well as on an inner, personal level ~ we may find that even the difficult or nasty gifts from the Universe can bring us the most miraculous outcomes...

Especially in the energy we are living in today it pays to trust the Universe...

Trusting the Universe

.
Do you trust the Universe?
Do you truly believe that the Universe is All Knowing, and that whatever it brings on your path ultimately is for your benefit? To learn from, as an instigation for personal growth ~ a guide on your spiritual path?

It is one of those questions that right of the bat are easy to say ‘Yes’ to ~ until it starts affecting our lives. Then it all becomes a bit too close as we may feel pushed around for no reason at all...

But if we really trust that the Universe is a beneficial Universe that will guide us to exactly those situations, those people and places that are most beneficial to us as a spiritual being ~ and all of us are spiritual beings ~ then everything we may encounter on our individual, personal paths is a gift.
A gift from the Universe to help us move ahead, to learn, to change, to become who we are truly meant to be.

Something that is easy to accept when we find ourselves at the right place at the right time to get that new job, or to win that price ~ in other words, when it pays off.
But what about for instance an accident, or a fall, a burglary. Or perhaps something less dramatic like a person cutting you off in traffic. When something like that happens, do you still trust the Universe and believe that whatever it is that just happened is a gift from that benevolent Universe?

In other words, it is a lot easier to trust the Universe when we have an immediate positive gain; and a lot harder when what we experience hurts us in any way.
Then we may quickly revert to statements like; ‘I never asked for that’, or ‘I have done nothing to deserve that’. ‘That was uncalled for’. Anything to make the point that we have done nothing wrong and shouldn’t be treated this way.

Yet if this too is a gift from an All Knowing, benevolent Universe ~ then no matter how adverse the situation, there is something in it that will permit us to move ahead on our personal path with great strides...
It can be a signal to be more aware of our surroundings ~ leading us to gain in awareness in any situation, be it mundane, in energy or spiritual. Or it can prompt us to reevaluate our priorities ~ our needs and desires ~ and as soon as we do, we may find ourselves taking on a totally new direction in life...
Bringing us a fulfillment like we never thought we’d experience...

Drawing a blank

.
The dictionary definition of ‘drawing a blank’ is: to be unable to get information, think of something, or achieve something.

From time to time, every one of us is bound to find themselves in a situation where we are ‘drawing a blank’. A moment in which ~ no matter how hard we try ~ there seems to be nothing there. Up to the point that even googling  yields no success. No idea gets sparked in our minds, no hints come from our surroundings. Blank.

The interesting thing is that this is usually not because of lack of input. As it turns out, these situations seem to happen more when there is a lot of input. Things we need to do, things we should be careful not to forget, things we need to take care of. And then there are the things we desire to do, for instance creative endeavors, recreation (literally re ~ creation), a walk on the beach, to sit at the trunk of a beech...
And suddenly we are approaching a point of being overwhelmed. A point where every next bit of input is too much. It is at that point that, when we try to envision how we will accomplish our next task, when we are trying to imagine the most creative or fun solution to even a minor project ~ there may be nothing there. We are drawing a blank.

The solution is as practical and down to earth as it is obvious: to cut back on the amount of things that are striving for our attention. To take a time out in order to get our priorities straight again. To take a deep breath so we can reconnect with our own inner core again, as our own innermost being always has the wisdom to direct us to exactly that activity ~ or non-activity ~ that will be most beneficial to us at that very moment.

What does not seem to work ~ at least it doesn’t for me ~ is to keep ‘Facebooking’, making phone calls, playing computer games, or watching TV. All of these things are still turning our attention outside of ourselves, whereas the solution is to be found inside...

The way each of us connects to our innermost being is personal. For some it is a walk in the forest, for others it is yoga, or meditation. Or just permitting ourselves to take time for that cup of coffee or tea ~ even when our logical mind says that there is no time for ‘frivolous’ things like that right now.
And yet, when we give ourselves that hour of time to get back in touch with ourselves ~ things in our lives start falling into place again.

Nothing blank about it...

Being aware

.
All of us are aware. We are aware of the weather, whether it is cold or warm, wet or dry. We are aware  that when we drop something, gravity takes over bringing it in no time at all ‘back to earth’. We are aware that there are certain colors that suit us, while other colors don’t do us any favors... The list is endless.

Yet in this day and age as soon as we mention awareness, or being aware, we seem to be talking about a specific awareness: an intuitive, meditative, high frequency awareness. An awareness that makes us sensitive to the atmosphere, the mood of a place. An awareness that allows us to become aware of certain energies around us. Even an awareness that permits us to pick up on for instance the outcome of a situation...

And as we gain in awareness we may also discover that the way in which you register this ‘high frequency awareness’ is quite personal. It is always linked to the senses. This means that we can ‘get it’ through feeling, seeing, hearing, smelling, and tasting. On top of that it is possible to receive the information we become aware of through knowing.
Whichever way the information is experienced, it needs to be put into perspective, translated in a sense, in order to become aware of the full picture.
For instance, a person who is aware through feeling would need to translate an inner feeling into an outer situation. A person who sees whatever they become aware of, sometimes only sees one or two frames in a movie and would need to extrapolate those frames into a full scope. When a person gains the awareness through knowing, they need to differentiate between their logical thought patterns and the more intuitive awareness...

Whichever way the ‘high frequency awareness’ is presented, is the way that suits a person best from a perspective of their innate ability; of their core being. It is not true that any one method is better than another method ~ as long as it works for you.

As this ‘high frequency awareness’ is connected to our senses, it does mean that when we choose to work more with our senses, our intuition ~ when we start exploring that vast world we can gain access to through our ‘high frequency awareness’ ~ it is easy to be overwhelmed...
And some people choose to not go there. To just live their lives in a more logical, and perhaps simpler arena...

But that doesn’t change the fact that all of us are aware!
