Disconnected

.
It seems like the more we look at ourselves as individuals, the more effort it takes to keep feeling connected. Add to that the use of our smart phones to listen to music wherever we go, and pretty soon we become an isolated individual. After all, when we have those earphones in, we enter our very own world; a world we are only apt to leave when we see another person talking to us, in which case we quickly free one of our ears, or when we arrive at our destination.

As it is a personal choice to listen to our preferred music wherever we go, the obvious perspective is that there is nothing wrong with doing that. Free will choice.

On the other hand, by isolating ourselves into our own, private world, we may not be as aware as to what is happening around us. Perhaps even lose touch with what is going on.
The fact of the matter is that when we are listening to music, chances are no-one will ask us anything. No conversations will be started, and therefore chance meetings become more and more rare…

It can eventually put us in a position where the only part of the world we pay attention to is that part of the world we know. The people we choose to be friends with. The music we choose to listen to. And as time moves on, there seems to be less and less reason to venture outside of our comfort zones, to discover new things; to widen our horizons.

Again, as this is part of our free will choice, there is absolutely nothing wrong with us or the choices we make so far. As long as we still have a sense that we are connected, a sense of belonging.

Because when we loose that sense of belonging, when we become so isolated that we find ourselves feeling disconnected ~ we may feel less happy than we would like to be. We may start feeling depressed. Almost as if we have lost our roots…

Looking around in the world today there seem to be more and more people who are searching for ways to re-connect with others. To even find a cause that can be shared; a common goal which may provide us with a sense that we are making a difference. That our existence is meaningful. A feeling of being connected; again.

In other words; it is important to find a way in which we are connected to other people and to the world around us. Through those connections we can make a difference in the world. Yet even more important; the more we feel connected to the world we live in, the easier it is to stay healthy!
